Very interesting topic.
I wasn’t aware of these e-cigarettes. They do appear to be an alternative way to cut back some, but it strikes me that the main selling point is that they cost less money than a regular pack of cigarettes.
I smoked for 35 years and quit in 2000. The only thing that worked for me was going “cold turkey” and eating Altoids every time I got a craving.
I admit it was a hellish month before the cravings finally subsided.
I wish that I could have gotten a hold of an e-cig starter kit back then. It would have been extremely easy to quit smoking forever.
To this day I’m leery of even smelling cigarette smoke and possibly getting that terrible old craving back!
While there is no burning paper, the tobacco itself is the real problem. As you know, there are many chemicals in burning tobacco that cause cancer. Fortunately there is no tobacco in ecigarettes, only harmless water vapor, great tasting flavoring and nicotine. Nicotine is not dangerous in moderate amounts. It is addictive but how addictive still remains questionable. I think that caffeine is probably more addictive than nicotine because caffeine will cause physical withdraw symptoms including headaches, tremors, nausea, drowsiness, and more. These caffeine withdraw symptoms can be so severe that they can literally disable a person for a whole day or more.
Nicotine withdraw symptoms are purely psychological. There are absolutely no physical withdraw symptoms attributed to nicotine at all. There is only a very strong craving. So it seems to me if you only use nicotine and cut out the burning tobacco, the negative health consequences are pretty much eliminated all-together.
Contrary to popular opinion, nicotine actually does have positive utilities in out society. Nicotine is the only drug known to have stimulant and depressant or relaxing qualities. If you are stressed out, a little nicotine can and will relax your nerves, yet if you need to concentrate on something a little nicotine can help you focus your attention and keep you awake through some boring seminar or report.
A very unique drug indeed that gets way too much negative attention. In reality it is only the tobacco that should be receiving the much deserved negative press.
